"Conjuring: Judgment Day" is the final ride on the ghost train for the highly profitable horror series.

For this final installment, eagerly awaited by fans of the massive "Conjuringverse," the Warrens wash their dirty laundry with their families.

Turning crosses, ghosts lurking in the dark corners of old American suburban houses and all kinds of poltergeists... It's time to meet the famous couple, specialists in occult forces, one last time.

Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) Warren return to action for Michael Chaves's The Conjuring: Judgment Day , in theaters Wednesday, September 10, in the final installment of a horror saga that has lasted more than a decade.

The Warrens, whose paranormal adventures are loosely based on a real-life American couple, have retired. Their life is peaceful and, above all, normal: barbecues are held in the garden, and their daughter Judy (Mia Tomlinson) is about to get engaged to the clumsy but touching Tony (Ben Hardy).

But that's without counting on a demon hidden in a sinister mirror, who is torturing a large family on the other side of Pennsylvania. The Warrens have already encountered this demon in their early days: the child Lorraine was carrying at the time even nearly died. Running away is out of the question: Ed and Lorraine have no choice but to intervene for one last hunt—and this time, their daughter Judy is along for the ride.

The challenge is a tall order for Michael Chaves, who already directed The Conjuring , The Nun and The Curse of the White Lady . In a decade, the Conjuringverse has become the most profitable horror saga in the history of cinema: $2.2 billion in total. In the United States, Judgment Day is already the best box office opening of the saga.

The high point of the series, the film is above all imbued with nostalgia. Written like a farewell letter to its characters, Conjuring 4 is bathed in light and joyful moments. Too much? In its moments of horror—which have become almost rare, as the first installments were so saturated with them—Michael Chaves repeats all the clichés that characterized them: omnipresent anguished music, sudden apparitions, animated dolls, and shapes that appear in the shadows.

In 2013, with The Conjuring: The Warren Files , James Wan managed to restore ghost stories and demonic possessions to their former glory after the 2000s, marked by the glory of gore (of which he himself was the figurehead through the Saw saga).

But ten years later, the narrative struggles to reinvent itself. Served with the same old sauce, minus the good, innovative ideas, the long-awaited "hour of reckoning " ultimately never arrives.
